On June 17, the EC recommended granting Ukraine the status of a candidate for the European Union. As the head of the European Commission (EC), Ursula von der Leyen, noted, the country “clearly showed the desire and determination to comply with European values and standards.” The chair of the commission pointed out that Kyiv has passed tough laws against oligarchs and implemented 70% of the EU recommendations on reforms in relation to minorities.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky thanked the European Commission for the recommendation, pointing out that this is “the first step towards membership in the EU”, which will bring “victory” closer Kyiv.
As follows from the conclusion of the EC, Ukraine will have to continue strengthening the fight against top-level corruption and oligarchs, as well as reforming legislation regarding minorities. In addition, Kyiv will need to adopt laws on the procedure for selecting judges of the Constitutional Court and complete the selection of candidates for the creation of the High Qualifications Commission of Judges. If these conditions are not met, the candidate's status may be revoked.
